Development of a seismic site-response zonation map for the Netherlands

Abstract. Earthquake site response is an essential part of seismic hazard assessment, especially in densely populated areas. The shallow geology the Netherlands consists a very heterogeneous soft sediment cover, which has strong effect on amplitude ground shaking. Even though low- to moderate-seismicity area, risk cannot be neglected, particular, because induced earthquakes occur. aim this study establish nationwide site-response zonation by combining 3D lithostratigraphic models and earthquake ambient vibration recordings. As first step, we constrain parameters (velocity contrast shear-wave velocity) that are indicative motion amplification Groningen area. For this, compare recordings using horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) method, borehole empirical transfer functions (ETFs), factors (AFs). This enables us define relationship between measured from ETF AF estimated vibrations HVSR. With show HVSR can used as proxy for response. Subsequently, curves throughout estimated. characteristics largely coincide with situ sequences presence velocity near surface. Next, profiles representing Dutch subsurface categorised into five classes, where each class represents level expected amplification. mean class, its variability, quantified 66 sites (ETF AF) 115 curves.
